Since the arrival of computer till now the concept of computer networking has come a long way. It now encompasses a larger field of meaning. Computer networking is concerned with connecting and sharing of information. The process is no doubt complicated. But if we analyze this in detail we will be able to understand the process better.

Now we are connected to the world via computers or if we be a little more specific we should say that it is the myriad number of computer applications that help us connect with each other. Overcoming geographical barriers we are now able to have a conversation with someone in another country over chat. We could also send e-mails and even documents through different computer applications. Video conferencing, video telephones are also the features of this networking. But the most phenomenal achievement of computer networking has been internet. Millions of people are now hooked on the internet. From business to communication to entertainment for every purpose internet has become an indispensable part of modern life.

Today we are seeing the sophisticated version of networking. But to reach this stage it has been through a long journey. It is worth learning some facts of this fascinating journey. We could start with ARPANET. Networking passed many stages coming from ARPANET to INTERNET. That include Ethernet, TCP/IP protocol, NSFNET. Finally internet came into being in 1992.

Computer networking is now a lot more intricate process. Basically we find three types of networks known as LAN, MAN and WAN. LAN is basically local area network. This is quite indicative of its function. It basically refers to the network of an office, schools as well as home. It mostly based on Ethernet technology. MAN on the other hand means Metropolitan Area Network. This is basically concerned with the network of a broader area as in a college campus or university campus area as well as a big city area. But for bigger areas like a country, or the world there is WAN which refers to Wide area network.

Computer networking is facilitating our activities in more ways than one. We are now enjoying better connectivity on the internet, on our mobile. The credit goes to the advanced techniques that are being devised and employed to better computer networking.
